The Proposition
Use the internet to promote a number of products which you are promoting on behalf of the suppliers, and for which you are going to receive commission on sales.
The more you promote, the more customers are attracted and the more sales will be made.
In simple terms, affiliate programs are a means for companies that sell products and services to share their revenue from sales. As a result of promoting their products or services, you are rewarded for sending customers to the company. The reward is normalling in the form of a commission on any sales made.
The Solution
The obvious solution to promoting the goods and services is to use the internet to advertise the products which you are promoting on behalf of the suppliers. The more you promote, the more customers are attracted and the more sales will be made. Sounds so simple doesn't it!
The Internet provides all that is required to promote your products to millions of people 24hrs each day, 7 days a week. So what do you need to do? The approach is straightforward, and has been followed by thousands of people already. It is similar to opening a store, although the internet is not confined by bricks and mortar, the process is the same. You have to decide what you are going to sell, where you are going to sell it and then try to convince customers to come into your store. If you are very good you may build a department srore, if you aren't so good then you may end up with a hand cart. Most people can build an equivalent of a local store in no time at all. It is all about imagination, flair and technique. You shop is your website, what you put in it is up to you.
Step 1 - Choose your Affiliate Schemes
This is the most fun and yet the most difficult step. It doesn't cost very much and can be totally free, but get it wrong and you will miss out on millions. It is that simple! This is really what the business is about, finding a market and then exploiting it by providing a site that pulls together a summary of information and provides links to the relevant detailed areas. This is your 'job' Create a summary of your topic and identify the relevant links. This is why people will come and visit your site. Whilst they are there you have an opportunity to sell to them
The temptation is to go for the obvious mass markets and generalised products. Wrong, Wrong, Wrong! You will not only not make any money, but you are likely to lose money on the promotion and advertising costs. This will make you become disillusioned and leave what could be a very profitable business. What makes you think that as a newbie with your first site you are going to instantly out perform all of the other thousands of sites in these areas? You may get lucky, but I doubt it!
A better approach is to do some research, the more the better, find a niche market that you know a bit about, maybe a hobby, or sport or pet, anything in fact that can easily be encapsulated into a discrete market slot. Use the internet search engines to check on the number of sites in these areas. (Tip: Make a note of the phrases and descriptive words that you find on these sites as you will need these later for keywords to put into your site.) For example, if a search pulls back over 2 million sites for a search topic, you won't have much success in promoting that particular phrase. But you may identify individual sub-sections of the topic that are more specialised and so less competitive. This also has the advantage of making the advertising costs lower. OK, the profits may be lower as well, but who said you were limited to one topic. This is the thrill of Affiliate Marketing, the opportunity is there to continually add to your portfolio of sites, each one increasing your income. All this part-time and working from home.
Once you have a suitable topic, you will need find affiliate schemes that match. Check out some of the pages from the search engine and look at the top or bottom of the pages to see if the originator is operating an affiliate scheme. If so check it out, and if you like the sound of it then sign up. Make sure that you enroll in the really big ones such as Google and Amazon, as these will be relevant to any topic.
This can be a lot easier than it sounds, but does require some thought as this your shop front. If you can build your own web site then you can start the design right away. However for those who are going to need some expert help, then there are many companies that will be only too happy to help you. Type "Web Design" into a search engine and check out the results. The level of services will range from buying ready made sites that are up and running, buying 'skeleton' sites that you complete, using packages or services that will build a site based upon a number of supplied variables, right through to hand built customised site design. One of the things to look for is how much control you have after the site is built, to change products, descriptions etc.
Make sure that you include your affiliate links into your web site, and you are ready for your online business to come to life
Step 3 - Host your Site
Once you have designed and built your web site then you will need to find somewhere to 'host' it. This will involve loading up your web pages onto a computer from where the whole of the Internet can access it. This will cost you a monthly payment, but will ensure the the technology and hardware of the Internet can be safely forgotten about, leaving you to concentrate on the business aspects. Normally, the same firm that does the design will offer to take care of the hosting aspect.
Step 4 - Promote Your Site
Just like running a store, you can fill it with the best products in the world, but if no one comes through the door, then you won't sell anything! You need to promote your site and tell the world where to find it. There are some obvious things that you can do to increase visibility of your site but be careful about quick fixes as search engines can penalise your site or even ban it if you abuse their systems
So always use reputable companies and don't believe all of the instant miracle solutions that are on offer. In general you need to submit your site to all of the major search engines. This can be a long and tedious process and one which can easily and safely be farmed out to reliable company. Next you need to promote your site through links to other sites with similar content. This is normally free as it benefits both parties. Search engines measure and rank sites in their listings according to a number of factors including links from and links to other similar sites. You could even write a short article, as a result of your research and offer to other sites as free content for them, of course you will include a link back to your site, so that the more it is published, the more links you achieve.
